Pilates classes geared for both women and men who are at risk for osteoporosis will begin this month. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. Robbi Sendrov, a California-native who retired in Golden three years ago, is volunteering her time to teach these classes through both the Lifelong Learning program at the College of the Rockies and the Golden Yoga Centre.

Golden Oldies Pilates will be broken up into two classes: Balance, Stability & Strength and Core and More. The first is geared for those who have trouble getting up and down from the mat and all exercises will be done in a chair or standing with balance aids. The latter is a 45 minute core conditioning class focusing on bone-building and bones loss prevention.

Sendrov has undergone two hip replacements and a knee replacement in the past three years. The main reason she is starting these classes is to bring exposure to the issue of osteoporosis.

According to Osteoporosis Canada, one quarter of women and at least one eighth of men over the age of 50 suffer from osteoporosis.

“This isn’t just a physical problem, it’s social too, “ Sendrov emphasized. “Adults can start to feel really isolated when they can’t move around.”

Sendrov would eventually like to bring a mobile health van to the Golden area that would test bone density. The Centre for Hip Health and Mobility has a similar program now that is travelling to communities across the Lower Mainland, visiting senior, child, and adolescent populations to collect information on mobility and bone health.

“They call osteoporosis the silent thief, because there’s no indication you have it unless you go in for a bone density test,” said Sendrov. “ I haven’t heard anyone talk about this issue in Golden.”

Karen Cathcart, Manager of the Golden College of the Rockies campus, is excited for Sendrov’s class to become part of the Lifelong Learning program.

“The Lifelong Learning program is very popular for seniors here in Golden. We’re happy to have Robbi join our team, and I think it’s a really important issue she’s addressing,” said Cathcart.

Sendrov stressed that anyone will be able to participate in her classes as she will tailor them to different levels.

“I really believe you can start exercising at any age,” she said.
